Infernal Relations grew out of a desire to revive the rich canon of gentle comic fiction that was once widespread. This includes much-adored works by J. K. Jerome, P. G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Evelyn Waugh, George and Weedon Grossmith and Geoffrey Willians. Classics by these authors regularly feature in any roundup of the best books of all time. So, why do we see so few fictional comedies nowadays?
This is not owing to waning interest among readers nor a lack of interest among authors, I believe, but simple economics. With the big publishers choosing to focus more on cinematic genres like thrillers, crime, sci-fi and fantasy whose adaptability for the screen means higher returns, this genre has sadly withered. For my part, I would like to see this wonderful tradition flourish again.
